This is very last minute, but we are very pleased to announce our next Philly GGUG meet up. Hans Dockter, the creator of Gradle, will be making a short stop in the Philly area on Friday June 11 and has agreed to give a talk about the current state and future of Gradle.

Gradle is a build tool that uses a Groovy DSL as the mechanism by which you describe your build process, no more messy XML. It provides out of the box build-by-configuration capabilities for Java, Groovy, Web, and Scala projects as well as a number of plug-ins. Recently the Grails team adopted Gradle as the build tool for the entire Grails project. If you are looking for an alternative to building your project that provides both convention based builds like Maven and declarative capabilities similar to Ant, then you must check out Gradle. Visit http://gradle.org... for more details on the project.

Chariot Solutions is hosting the event, as well as sponsoring pizza and beer (yep, I said beer!) for the evening. We will open the doors at 5:00 PM for some socializing and then start the talk promptly at 5:30 PM.

I had posted a link to a survey to rate the meet up. However, then meetup.com posted theirs. Let's use that one, it is simple and it works. I think I had a permissions problem with mine and it is probably more expedient to use the built in one.

Thanks again for coming to attend the meetup!

Hans is a force of nature. Gradle is a very powerful build language, and time after time he showed us how feature rich it is. Great speaker and I am so glad that he offered us a chance to host his talk.

was a great talk by Hans, who is really passionate about the topic (Gradle), and does not make you feel like he has only 62 minutes available.

Interesting and thorough overview of Gradle. Hans is an engaging and entertaining presenter. Excellent group discussion as well. Looking forward to sticking around a little longer next time to learn more about the group. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

Anyone who has worked with a large Java build system knows how quickly it can become a nightmare to maintain. Hans explained the root causes of these problems with the current tools and the solutions Gradle provides. His live coding demonstations were a great way to understand the concepts of Gradle, from the basic features to the really powerful capabilities of the tool. Even if you couldn't attend the meeting, keep an eye on this project. The Gradle team really understands the pain points most developers have with build tools. I wouldn't be surprised if this was as ubiquitous as Maven in a few years.
